Law clubs were established to provide students an opportunity to practice preparing and arguing law cases as realistically as possible. Law clubs began to be founded at Harvard in the 19th century; one of the earliest was the Marshall Club, founded in 1825. Gray (Harvard A.B. 1859; LL.B. 1861) was a legal scholar, founder (with classmate John C. Ropes) of the Boston law firm Ropes & Gray, and a professor of law at the Harvard Law School.
